Today is Administrative Professionals Day. Most of my day jobs over the past couple of decades have been administrative in nature so no matter what my future holds as far as making money goes, fellow admins will forever hold a special place in my heart.
On Saturday, I met up with a friend from grad school who was in the area for the weekend. I refuse to believe it’s been nearly 14 years since I last saw her! We spent most of the day in the art wing of the Oakland Museum, primarily to check out the Heath Ceramics show. After that we checked out Creative Growth Art Center, which was closed for the weekend and is still not open to visitors in general, but cool to check out nevertheless. I remember visiting with a class I TAed the year after undergrad (Art, Medicine, and Disability with Katherine Sherwood…I wrote about that gig here as part of my “burning bridges” series about all the various day jobs I’ve had over the years).
Speaking of those formative years, from Creative Growth we moved on to The Roll Up Project, which is currently showing the work of Craig Nagasawa, another professor I worked with as an undergrad art major at Cal.
Nicole was one of the artists I interviewed for the Artists in Offices podcast. You can listen to that episode here. And if you’re generally curious about how artists juggle creative and paid work, along with everything else, check out the latest post on my podcast newsletter, in which I ponder time and “the hustle.”
I leave you with this, a poem by Margaret Fuller about the majestic passion flower (like the one above, currently in bloom down the street from my house):
